Wednesday, UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said that it is possible that COVID-19 vaccines will be less effective against the Omicron variant, however, they will still provide protection against it.

"It is of course possible that vaccines will be less effective, and we don't know for sure yet," Javid told Sky News.

He noted that vaccines are still the best protection for us.

Javid said scientists were working to determine whether Omicron was "any more dangerous" than the Delta variant, which is the current dominant strain of COVID-19 in the UK.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the UK has confirmed 10,228,772 cases and 144,969 deaths.
